ACC partners with Global Empowerment Services (GEmS) in Jamaica to help equip immigrant families through educational resources. The families in the neighborhood are mainly from South Asia and many are Muslim.
The center provides after school tutoring for 1st-8th graders on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-6:30PM. There are also beginner through advanced ESL classes for adults during the week (during the day and Weds and Thursday evenings). For both tutoring and ESL classes, curriculum is provided, and volunteers are trained and work alongside staff.
Many of the families in the neighborhood participate in both the adult courses and send their children to tutoring sessions. The center also offers girls’ and boys’ clubs, a beginning exercise class for women, outdoor kids’ clubs in the summer, and helps prepare students for citizenship exams. The girls’ club is a mixture of crafts, games and stories about women who have influenced and helped and the boys' club is playing board games. These all provide ways to holistically support and encourage entire families.
This is a great opportunity to impact families in Queens with the love of Christ!
